Biography

Anne Marie Jugnet is a French post-conceptual artist who explores the theme of language. She uses the medium of light, especially its glaring and blinding qualities, in its many forms -- photographs, light projections, neons, and films – to reveal words, as if they were appearing for the first time.

In 1987, she received the First Prize in Drawing at the Salon de Montrouge Exhibition (France).

In 1991, the Froment & Putman Gallery in Paris organized her first solo exhibition. The same year, three important exhibitions followed:

- Parcours privés 91 [Private Pathways 91], organized by Adelina von Fürstenberg in the courtyards of the Marais district in Paris. For this, Jugnet was awarded First Prize in Contemporary Sculpture by Martini, Inc.

- A solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Bordeaux (CAPC), directed at the time by Jean-Louis Froment.

- Mouvements 1 [Movements 1], a group exhibition of five young French artists at the National Museum of Modern Art (Pompidou Center) in Paris.

Then, many European galleries, museums and art centers exhibited her work. Among them were: Valentina Moncada Gallery in Rome, Karin Schorm Gallery in Vienna, Künstlerhaus in Brème, Kunsterverein in Heidelberg, the Museum of Ludwigshafen, Kunsthalle in Klagenfurt, W139 & Proton ICA in Amsterdam, Casino Luxembourg, the Contemporary Art Center of Vassivière, the Museum of la Roche-sur-Yon, the Museum of Concrete Art in Mouans-Sartoux…

In 1992, the New Museum in New York invited Jugnet to take part in the exhibition “The Big Nothing or Le Presque Rien” In 1995, she returned to New York for her first solo exhibition at Artists Space, a prestigious avant-garde exhibition space directed by Claudia Gloud. In order to prepare for this solo exhibition, Jugnet was awarded a grant by the French government to live and work in New York. There, she met Alain Clairet.

Anne Marie Jugnet and Alain Clairet arrived at a turning point in 1995, when they moved together to Paris. A few months later, they began working together and presented themselves and their artistic work under one name, Jugnet + Clairet.
